3 Ways to Learn Sounds

Sound Bag

I love the Sound Bag. We “shop” around our home filling the bag with whatever sound on which we’re focusing. It gets us all involved and incorporates movement into the learning activity.

Individual Sound Basket or Box

This basket or box is the specific sound we’re learning that week. So, for example, last week we learned “B” so we had a “B” Box. This activity is great because, like the bag activity, it incorporates movement into learning.

Sound Box

We have another “First Words” Sound Box that we keep like a recipe box with various every day items we cut out from catalogs, etc to put into the box. This box is designed more to be in line with the Montessori approach. This box includes all sounds of the alphabet. Our basket is of beginning sounds but I am excited to do just vowels, blended sounds and ending sounds at some point this year when my 3 year old is ready for it. Sometimes we fill together but when I have an extra moment (ha!) I fill a basket with 25 objects (no X because it isn’t considered a beginning sound) and let him explore and fill his box. This incorporates a control of error into the activity allowing him to guide his own learning without me having to intervene.

I hope that we inspired you today. If you enjoyed this post, you might also enjoy this Sound Map activity. Please leave a comment, I love hearing from you!
