As I attempt to plan the upcoming week and prepare to publish posts on “Forms of Matter” and “Language”, I am finding it very difficult to focus on the task at hand. Like many of you, my mind keeps drifting to the tragedy in Connecticut. My eyes fill with tears as I cannot help but to attempt to imagine every minor detail of the event. I can’t help but think hard about the sounds of silence and gun pops. I can’t help but think of the teachers’ desperate attempts to save their children. Some experiencing success, while others did not. I think about the bravery and the intelligence of people inside the school. I think about how sick the young gun man much have been to be driven to such extreme violence and hatred against mostly very young and innocent people.
I have to stop thinking about the details of what happened in Newtown on Friday. Instead I choose to focus on the greatness that can come from such horrific events. Inspiration: I am inspired by the strength of those closely involved in the event. Gratitude: I want to hold my children tighter. I want to tell them how much I love them, again and again and again. Perspective: Even the toughest days are not so bad.
I grieve for this community. I know that I am not alone. We are not helpless. We have the power to love more and to be more kind. We have the capability to raise and educate thoughtful, strong, responsible and gentle human beings. We can all learn from this tragedy. I choose not to be angry at gun control (or not). I choose to not make this tragedy political. I choose to grieve for this community. I choose to focus on what I can do in my small world to make this earth a better place.
Thanks for reading.
