Apple Banana Nutmeg Puree

23 Aug

Super simple puree for your little one just starting solids. If you are anything like me, most mornings are a bit rushed in trying to get ready for the day and make sure my kids get fed before they melt down (low blood sugar anyone?). This puree will save the day.

So grab your BEABA, or whatever you use to steam and puree, an apple, half a banana and a spice – you can’t really go wrong with nutmeg or cinnamon.

Peel the apple, I prefer a sweet one like a Fuji apple, cut it up and throw it in your steamer for about ten minutes.

While the apple is steaming, peel your banana and throw half of it in the microwave for 20 seconds just to warm enough to make mashing it easier. Then, mash the banana in the bowl you’re using to serve.

Once the apple is done steaming, puree and add it to banana. You can leave the reserve water in to puree. If you aren’t blending the apple with something else, like oats or bananas, then using the reserve water will produce a very watery puree.

Add the nutmeg or cinnamon and mix

Serve warm to your little one. This will make one to two servings.

Peach Plum with Vanilla Purée

20 Aug

Super simple delicious purée for your little one. Summer is great for a lot of reasons but if you are a parent access to fresh and local fruit is a big plus.

Today I steamed one large peach and three small plums for my littler one’s breakfast. I added a little vanilla to cut the sourness a bit. Yum.

So grab your Beaba and purée away. Remember to remove the skins before pureeing. I steamed the fruit to make an easier and smoother purée. I added the vanilla after pureeing.

If you want to thicken up the purée either dump the water from steaming (you really don’t need the reserve water), which is what I did, and/or add rice cereal or ground oats.

Quick and Easy First Foods Meal and Built In Sensory Activity

14 Aug

Who needs fancy, complicated sensory tubs (well, me but…) when you have banana and avocado? I was trying to do five things at once, to which I am sure you can all relate, including preparing a quick and easy banana and avocado puree. Erh…mashing a half banana and a half avocado together. In the middle of my effort, my 7 month old grabbed the banana and subsequently shoved the peel in his mouth with one hand and quickly, like a ninja in the night, shoved two fingers in the avocado. Eventually I gave up. Mashed the banana a bit, mashed the avocado a bit and placed all items (banana, avocado, banana peel and avocado rind) on his high chair tray. Then I held my breath as he dove in – brace yourself for a (creative and fun!) mess.

Win. Win.

He had a meal and a sensory experience all in one. Now that, my friends, is efficiency.

Happy Baby Frozen Organic Babyfood Cubes – Review

13 Aug

I was thrilled to find that Amazon Fresh, Seattle’s local grocery delivery (yes, I know, we’re very fortunate.) delivers HAPPYBABY products. I was even more thrilled to learn that HAPPYBABY offers frozen organic baby food cubes. Offered in three stages, the first stage gives us simple food purees such as squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, pears and greens (aka spinach) while the second and third stages introduce foods such as dahl, salmon and turkey. We’ve tried sweet potatoes, pears and the greens. Backed by the infamous Dr. Sears, you can feel good about what you are feeding your baby (even the packaging – BPA free), and, quite, honestly, when I pull the tray of cubes out of the box, it resembles my own frozen baby food trays! The company produces food that is “allergen friendly” and gives back to Project Peanut Butter, a non-profit aiding starving children in Malawi and Sierra Leone.

Bottom line: you can feel good about purchasing this product.

The ONLY negative I have to offer you is that when I heat up the cubes, the result is very watery. I have worked around this issue by adding ground oats. You could also add ground grains, such as brown rice or quinoa.

As for price, this product is definitely more expensive than other mainstream brands but reasonably priced for the value.

Happy eating!
