Healthy Snacks? What? I recently took my kid to the dentist and here is what I learned…

17 Nov

I recently took my 16 month old to the dentist for the first time. I scheduled the appointment after I was told by numerous parents at a huge playgroup that I was remiss not taking him (gulp) within six months of getting his first tooth. Oops. Well, I can’t really say “Oops”. I was in a state of denial. I knew what I needed to do, erh, what was being recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, but I also know my kid and that’s important.

Okay, I admit it, I was I scared for that appointment. I feared it. I loathed it. My little guy screams like bloody murder almost NEVER except at the Doctor’s office. We’re talking red face, sweaty head, screaming lungs off upset. And the thing is, I prove him right every time (i.e. he does get shots that hurt.) thus reinforcing the behavior.

Well, I am happy to report the appointment went extremely well. The dentist suggested the typical twice a day brushing with the evening brushing being most important (we produce less saliva, which helps to break down sugar and thus protect your teeth, in the pm) and showed me how to man handle my 16 month old to brush his teeth (chances of me being able to actually accomplish this feat on my own are pretty slim).

The dentist is young, his office modern with all the compelling wooden toys and technology. Most of what I enjoyed about him is that he holds refreshing perspectives. For example, he believes in children beginning their visits to the dentist at an earlier age because it makes for better emotional adjustment rather than bringing your kid in when they are already old enough to know better. Furthermore he believes starting visits earlier also helps create healthy habits early, of which , as you all know, I am a huge proponent.

We left happy except for one thing. My crutch on-the-go snack got a shake of the head from the dentist. What is so wrong about Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies and Honey Grahams? Apparently a lot according to my dentist. The carbs that break down on the teeth, etc. I really did appreciate the lecture and still felt that way once I was home, staring into our cabinet filled with boxes of the “crutch”. Okay, I appreciated the lecture but it did strike a nerve. I am not going to lie, I may have asked the dentist, “Do you have kids?” at one point. Yes, I stepped over the line. However, the two minute piece of advice did get me thinking – “have I become lazy? have i created a crutch for our on-the-go routine?”

So I am attempting to be better and prepare healthier snacks for the road. Here are a few that I have “re”-incorporated into our daily routine:

  • Will I eliminate Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies and Honey Grahams? Absolutely not. Moderation is key, folks. They are convenient, my kid loves them and they aren’t THAT bad for us. Just remember to wipe down or brush your child’s teeth before bed and you’ll be good.

One last thing, for on-the-go snacking use a Munchkin Snack Catcher. It’ll save your sanity.

    Happy eating and brushing…

FIVE Ways to Integrate OATS into a Kiddos Diet

    21 Jun

Oats are a wonderful addition to your family’s diet. Oats are great for the heart, and packed with loads of fiber and protein, oats help your family start the day right.  They also contain antioxidants that protect the circulatory system. Some of you may have noticed that I get a wee bit obsessed with certain food (erh…leeks for example) and OATS are no exception. Oats provide a good bang for your buck. So great for you and easy to integrate into your meals.  So below are a few of my favorite ways to integrate oats into my kiddo’s diet.

As many of you know, my current method of preparing oats involves grinding them to a powder with my coffee grinder.  This method works well for us and I am sticking with it.  You can choose to prepare your oats any way that works for your family.

    TOP FIVE FAVES

    1. Simply Oatmeal with Fruit– Now this one is big and wide. Very simple. Add oats to a variety of fruits such as bananas, apples, peaches, blueberries apricots or strawberries, serve with some Greek yogurt and you have a breakfast jammed packed full of goodness to start your kiddo’s day.  Also adding a little spice, such as cinnamon or nutmeg, is always a sure winner!  A few of my favorite combos are:
      • Apple & Cinnamon
      • Pear Cinnamon & Vanilla
      • Strawberry & Peaches
      • Roasted Banana & Nutmeg
      • Any sort of melon (helps to thicken the puree too)
    2. Smoothie Sneak – I am a fan of banana smoothies with vanilla, plain yogurt with ice. You can get as creative as you want with smoothies but I like to keep it simple, especially if your kiddo is still young (i.e. one year or less). Strawberry peach smoothies are also a favorite.  Add a bit of ground oats and you are off to a great day. Smoothies are also a good vessel for adding Flax Oil.
    3. Banana Oat Pancakes with Cinnamon – One of my kiddos recent favorite meals. Such a treat and so easy. Simply make a batter as you would normally, add a bit of ground up oats (as much as you would like to add, I typically add 1/8 cup to a cup of batter or so) and mashed bananas (again as much as you would like to add, I typically mash a half a banana and mix in a bit at a time).  My kiddo takes to a thicker pancake better because it works better as a finger food. I also put a smidge of Greek yogurt on the side of his dish. He “dips” the pancake (or smashes) in the yogurt as a nice compliment.
    4. Breaded Fish - Totally with compliments to Wholesome Babyfood.  My little guy loves cod so adding a little oat crust and some spice was welcomed with opened arms (or mouth I should say).
    5. Oatmeal with Pumpkin – Bake or steam pumpkin, add a little nutmeg, add your ground oats and puree away. Your little one will be in heaven.  With loads of Vitamin A as well as other Vitamins and Minerals such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Potassium, Copper and Maganese, pumpkin is wonderful to integrate into your family’s diet.  Of course you can substitute other squash, acorn or butternut for example, and the combination would also work well.  I just happen to like pumpkin!

A great resource for using OATS is the Quaker Oats website.

    Avocado!

    11 Apr

Avocados are a wonderful first food for your little one because they are creamy and smooth. There was a great blog post recently on Avocados at Food with Kid Appeal. Definitely check it out. I personally love avocados. I slice them up, sprinkle a little salt and mmmm. Delicious. The good news is that avocados are also filled with amazing nutrients for your little ones.

One very simple combination I use frequently is 1/2 medium avocado with 2 or 3 tablespoons of Fage Greek Yogurt. Great for breakfast but I have been making this combination as an afternoon snack for my little guy. He loves it.

Avocados are packed full of nutrients. No sodium. No cholesterol. 20 vitamins and minerals to be exact. Here is a guide to the nutrients in 1.5 of a medium avocado. Pretty amazing stuff.

Another quick and easy recipe for your little ones is simply combining in your chosen pureer:

    • 1/2 medium avocado, peeled and sliced
    • 1/2 banana, peeled, sliced and warmed
    • 1/4 cup blueberries, warmed

    _______
A great breakfast for your little one.

    A few tips:

    • Buying organic is not necessary because of avocados thick, protective skins
    • Once your little one is of age, in order to preserve, cut a lemon in half and squirt the juice on your avocado. Lemon, incidentally, pairs very well with avocado so use it once your little one is old enough to handle citrus (ideally 12 months but depending on your child, introduction could happen sooner).

Check out this site on avocados. Very user friendly and enormously resourceful on all things avocados, including for your little one.

Cheers and, as always, happy eating!

Basic Breakfast Puree – Have Greek Yogurt? Add Fruit.

    10 Mar

Super easy and super yummy.  Best for breakfast.  I personally love Greek Yogurt and have a serving each morning.  A great source of protein, easy on the digestive rack and its smooth texture is perfect for infants (and not to mention adults!).  So why not integrate the goodness into my LM’s start to the day too?

Tips on introducing yogurt to your wee are always helpful.

Try any simple fruit puree made of apples, strawberries, bananas, blueberries etc and combine with whatever dose of Greek Yogurt you desire. You can also combine a fruit.  Whatever you and your wee one desire!

Bananas are easiest because you can simply throw a medium sized cut up banana in the microwave to warm and add greek yogurt.  Blueberries and Strawberries you may want to warm either on the stove or in the microwave a bit before blending. Apples you will want to steam to soften and then puree in a blender or your Beaba.  So pick your battle depending on how much time you have on your hands.  Always good to have options, right?

So much goodness in one serving.

    Happy Eating!
