65+ Fantasy Fiction Chapter Books for Middle Schoolers

SHARE THIS POST:

Okay, as the mother of three boys, I am well aware of the popularity and quality of the fantasy fiction books Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, Wings of Fire, and Dungeons & Dragons series. I am excited to share these award-winning books with you!

65+ Fantasy Fiction Books for 11 to 13 Year Old Boys and Girls

But where can we go from here?

So, I went in search of fantasy fiction for middle school boys to add to our library collection.

Rick Riordan Chapter Book Series

#1 – Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard [10 – 14 years]

If you enjoyed Percy Jackson, you will enjoy this 3 book series. Magnus Chase is a once-homeless teen on a death-defying quest across the Norse realms. The narration is sassy and full of adventure.  As a resident of the Hotel Valhalla, this son of the god Frey is now one of Odin’s chosen warriors.

Magnus and his friends, Hearthstone the elf, Blitzen the dwarf, Samirah the Valkyrie, and other heroic characters must use all their wits and special talents in order to defeat fearsome giants, lethal creatures, and meddlesome gods in order stave off Ragnarok.

There are sensitive topics [e.g. homosexuality, gender fluidity, etc] that come up in the narrative. If you’re concerned, I suggest reading the books before your child. Personally, we had no issues with the content.

#2 – Trials of Apollo [10 – 14 years]

This fast-paced 5 book series gives you a new take on Greek and Roman mythology from the point of view of a fallen god. As with Magnus Chase, this book delivers a lot of humor and a lot of heart.

Many loved characters from the Heroes of Olympus series and Percy Jackson make appearances in this series and this series concludes the Percy Jackson storyline. Plus, we meet new demigods in this series and find ourselves in Roman times with protagonists based on Roman emperors.

#3 – The Kane Chronicles [8 – 12 years]

This 3 book series takes us through a journey with Egyptian gods via the story of siblings Sadie and Carter who learn they are descendants of two pharaoh bloodlines.  My boys love their relationship and the adventures they have in the search for their father.

The book switches narration from Sadie to Carter and back again, which we enjoy but may be less appealing to some readers.  Rick Riordan delivers an engaging learning experience without overwhelming the reader with too many details. There are lots of twists and turns, so it’s fun to try to predict what’s going to happen.

#4 – The Demigod Series [10 -14 years old]

We love this series! Consider this series a question & answer a la Rick Riordan’s wit narrated by none other than Percy Jackson himself. Each Q&A is akin to a short story that will engage your child and fill in backstories to both Heroes of Olympus and Percy Jackson series.

What dangers do runaway demigods Luke and Thalia face on their way to Camp Half-Blood?

Are Percy and Annabeth up to the task of rescuing stolen goods from a fire-breathing giant who doesn’t take kindly to intruders?

How exactly are Leo, Piper, and Jason supposed to find a runaway table, dodge a band of party-loving Maenads (who just might be a little psychotic), and stave off a massive explosion…all in one hour or less?

Brandon Mull Chapter Book Series

#5 – Fablehaven [8 – 13 years]

We began this 5 book series at the start of the pandemic. In a hammock each afternoon we’d read aloud together and we couldn’t get enough. This series centers on siblings Kendra and Seth who discover their grandparents are the caretakers of a sanctuary for magical creatures.

Smart people learn from their mistakes. But the real sharp ones learn from the mistakes of others.

Parents enjoy this series as much as their children. The vocabulary is rich, the storytelling engaging, and the writing top quality.  Plus Brandon Mull emphasizes high morals & values and teaches the reader about trade-offs in decision making and how to handle consequences.

We watch the characters grow and mature as the series progresses. These books are very entertaining, clean, and free of any hidden agendas. I will definitely be reading the story of Kendra and Seth with my other children. I would highly recommend this book for kids 10 and over.
