Valentines Day Activities for Preschoolers
Large Bead Stringing is a wonderful entree into sewing for young children. The activity develops fine motor skills. The string is a lace we had from a lacing card set. The beads are from . Be sure to have “keeper bead” as an anchor and describe this part to the child.
My son’s Montessori class does a lot of sewing, which I love! One of the easiest materials to use for beginners is burlap. I used pink yarn, drew a heart with a permanent marker and used a large needle. I tape down the edges of the burlap. The child can also paint the shape.
Combining art and nature makes me happy. I love to watch children using real materials from nature in any type of activity. The process is creative and best uses a child’s senses. Real objects are key. I like buying a bag of beans that have a variety of beans with which to work. The child seems more interested in the materials and can pick and choose those beans he’d like for his mosaic. Younger children will create a more “free for all” mosaic, which is great, which older children can be more definitive if they’d like by creating a specific design for the mosaic. This shape is simple: a heart.
