My son's love for birds continues to grow just as he does. Many days during the summer were spent bird-watching from our living room window or listening for their songs during our nature walks. When we decided to plan the advent activities for our 25 Days Until Christmas Countdown this year, I thought that decorating a tree outside to attract birds would be the perfect way include one of his passions into our holiday celebration.
My son (28 months) and I decided to create two different types of bird seed ornaments that will soon adorn a tree in our backyard. He is always eager to help out in the kitchen, so he was thrilled to assist with our first recipe for Cookie Cutter Bird Feeders. Instead of using cookie cutters, like the recipe called for, we filled a muffin tin with our bird seed mixture and used a small pastry tube to create a hole for the ribbon.
This recipe instructed us to allow the feeders to sit overnight and harden once they were complete. In the meantime, we crafted another ornament for the tree using peanut butter, paper towel rolls, and bird seed. Prior to slathering the peanut butter over the rolls, I cut the card board into smaller pieces. My son and I love working together as a team on many of our projects, so he asked me to help with the peanut butter, while he rolled the tubes in bird seed.
The next day, both sets of ornaments were firm enough to decorate with! We headed out to purchase a small pine tree for our backyard and placed it right outside our family room window. That way, we would have a good view of any birds that may decide to visit.
The weather was perfect for this advent activity, so we lingered outside as we hung the ornaments from the tree, just to take in the fresh air. Since the tree is right outside our back door, I'm sure we'll be venturing out to take a peek and see if any birds have nibbled on our ornaments. Who knows? Maybe we'll even have the chance to see them enjoying our little treats throughout the season!
