Easy Science Activity for Kids – Earth Day Borax Crystal

I couldn’t resist doing this super cool science activity- make a borax crystal! A great way to integrate basic science concepts into an activity and have a very cool result to display!

Make a Borax Crystal for Earth Day

So, with my first go at the infamous Borax crystal, I decided to celebrate the Earth!

We used the crystal making borax recipe from Sweet & Simple Things.

Boiling Water

Something to let your Borax solution and pipe cleaner design sit in at least overnight. We used a flower vase.

Pipe cleaners

You will also need a pencil and something to tie your Earth onto the pencil. We used dental floss but you could use yarn, string or a pipe cleaner.

How to Make a Borax Crystal

I configured the blue and green pipe cleaner into an Earth.

I boiled and poured into the vase enough water to cover the pipe cleaner hanging by, in my case, floss. You’ll want 3 tablespoons roughly for every cup of water, dissolve the Borax so the water becomes cloudy.

I wrapped the floss around the pencil and tied it to my Earth.
