Reading together as a family has many benefits. Not only will it assist in igniting your child’s lifelong love of reading, but reading together gives you time to connect and build relationships. These books for kids are equally as entertaining and meaningful to adults.
My goal in putting together this list is to appeal to a wide range of ages including parents! You will fall in love with these books. Kids love these books. Your kids will shed tears and laugh out loud with these chapter books.
What is a good family book to read together?
There are many popular stories perfect for reading aloud as a family. So, choosing one depends on your mood. Are you in the mood for a classic read-aloud or ready to try out some more recent popular books? The good news is that there are ample choices across the board!
What are some popular stories that parents could read to their children?
Wishtree by Katherine Applegate is an absolute gem. Short chapters make it easy to progress and keep younger kids engaged.
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls might be a tough book to get through with your children – there are some difficult and emotional moments throughout the story. It is a book you will not regret sharing with your family.
Henry Higgins by Beverly Cleary – There are six books in this often overlooked series. Beverly Clearly’s more prominent and well-known Ramona Quimby series is well worth the read, too, but Henry Higgins has a special place in my heart. We loved the audio, too.
Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren causes some criticism. The critics out there take offense with the author’s chosen dialogue for Pippi. I suppose the language can be offensive OR a cause for conversation.
The humor of the book trumps any offense. Trust me.
My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett is the first book of a three-book series each of which is fantastic and engaging. I highly recommend the audiobook, too. The narration is phenomenal.

A family read-aloud is any book you digest together as a family. We listen to many books through Audible, Libby [our library borrowing app], or Scribd [totally worth the $12/month].
The Best Read Aloud Books for Families
The Silver Arrow by Lev Grossman is a new one to me and we recently began listening to the audiobook on a road trip. Highly recommend.
Fortunately, The Milk by Neil Gaiman creates a masterpiece using cereal and time travel. I mean, could it get any better? Plus, any book that Neil Gaiman narrates is one worth listening to.
Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard Atwater is a really fun read and much better than the movie. This book is a classic and the humor will have your entire family in stitches.
The Mouse & the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary is the first of a series of three all worth reading. I am not usually a fan of mice but I can’t resist the likes of this one. I was a sucker for Mona in the Heartwood Hotel series, too. They got me.
James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl is my favorite read-aloud of Mr. Dahl’s books. I am a huge fan of all 16 books in this Roald Dahl box set. Take advantage of buying in bulk.
