Learning about the World Doesn’t Require an iPad

SHARE THIS POST:

My 4.5 year old craves exploring and learning about the world. As much as I’d love to fire up the iPad every time my child desires to learn more about a topic about which I have little depth of knowledge, I can’t. It isn’t responsible of me. It isn’t what I want for my family. Do you?

LEARNING ABOUT THE WORLD

I won’t lie to you. I have a dirty secret.I love YouTube, like “drool” love YouTube.

When my children wanted to learn more about The Big Bang, I couldn’t find the words. So, I fired up Youtube to seek out the talent I needed to help me guide my children in this way.

It is not my default. It can’t be my default.

Avoid Firing Up the iPad – Learning about the World

Are you ready for my real secret?

No? Okay, I’ll wait…here is a hint.

Learning about the World with Books

Books. Yup. Not just ANY books, though. Have you heard of Usborne Books & More? Please do yourself a favor, check out Usborne Books & More. I recently got my hands on four books that have rocked my child’s learning to a whole new level. He adore these books. He won’t put them down. I am so impressed with these books, below you’ll find more details on why I think Usborne is an opportunity not to be missed.  These books cover art, history, science, geography, and culture, a perfect start to our learning about the world. The base for our learning this fall and winter.

Art Treasury

Learning about the world comes in all types of forms. One of our all time favorite ways to learn about the world is to learn about other cultures through art and art history. Artists are creators, inventors, scientists, and explorers. There is much to teach children about the life and work of artists. Upborne’s Art Treasury is the perfect learning companion. It includes art from around the world and from different time periods. The best part, though, is the treasury includes projects to help take children to the next level of their learning.

Secrets of the Rainforest

Another way we’re learning about the world is to explore biomes.  Kane Millers’s Secrets of the Rainforest is absolutely beautiful. The cover alone had me sold.  My son enjoyed the creative see through pages included in the book. Plus the book invites the reader into its pages again and again with the glorious and colorful art work. There are six books included in the Shine-A-Light series. I am particularly excited about Kane Miller’s Secrets of the Seashore book.

Under the Sea

This book is a fabulous resource for your home or classroom library. It is part of our Beginners non-fiction collection of over 30 different titles. So, once your child devours this book, she can move onto the next 29. This book inspires questions and ignites a desire to want to learn more. Within the pages, questions are asked and answered covering a variety of topics accompanied with gorgeous photography and art work.

Look Inside Our World

Usborne offers 10 books in the Look Inside series. My 4.5 year old loved the Look Inside. He had a bit of trouble keeping the book out of his younger brother’s hands. So, when I learned about the 6 books in the series offered to the younger crowd, I did a happy dance. These 6 books have the title Peek Inside. Then, wouldn’t you know it, my 6 year old wanted a piece of the action, too. Thankfully, Usborne Books & More offers 11 books  in this series for older children with the title See Inside. Look Inside Our World covers a remarkable spectrum of topics – including life science, geology, physical science, and geography – with easy to follow illustrations and a lift the flap approach to engage the reader even more.

Before you fire up the iPad today, check out these books. Order these books from Usborne Books & More or check them out at your local library. You can thank me later. Have a great day, friends! Happy learning! I love books. Check out my other reading & writing posts, or better yet check out my curated children’s book lists covering a variety of topics from creativity, engineering, courage, anxiety, and the outdoors.

P.S. I was given these books by an Usborne Books & More consultant for review. The opinions are 100% my own.
