Learning Sounds with Preschoolers {e is for egg}

I love using real objects in learning sounds activities with preschoolers. There is something about feeling the “real deal” that grounds the learning. Children take in the world through their senses.

 So, to me, using real objects makes the most sense, which brings me to a Sound Activity my 3 year old did this week.

Language Activity with Preschoolers Approach

  • Invite the child to the sound activity
  • Set up a tray or mat
  • Review the sound, trace the letter, invite the child to trace the letter repeating the sound “eh”
  • Pull out the image booklet, review images
  • Pull out the objects, review the objects
  • Bring out the mortar & pestal {this always intrigues the child}
  • Bring out the egg shells, ask the child if he knows the name of it
  • Demonstrate how to use the mortar & pestal to crush the egg shells
  • Allow the child to crush the egg shells
  • Invite the child to make an outline of the letter “e” on the paper
  • Invite the child to sprinkle the egg shells or neatly place the shells onto the glue outline, or in any manner the child wishes to apply the shells
  • Allow time to dry
  • Display
