Montessori Toys for Babies & Toddlers: 7+ Ideas for You

Montessori is a way of life. You can never start too early integrating the philosophy into your home and your child’s life with Montessori toys for babies.

I was researching materials for babies. So, I thought I would share these thoughts and ideas with you. Of course, nothing beats mother nature, as you know, but the materials listed below are wonderful for early learning.

I wrote a Montessori Toys Gift Guide for Babies & Toddlers last year. I created this list without looking at the old list and came up with new materials!

INFANT TODDLER MONTESSORI TOYS

“Too little attention is paid to the newborn child that has just experienced the most difficult of human crises.  When he appears in our midst, we hardly know how to receive him, even though he bears within himself a power to create a better world than that in which we live ourselves. ” ~ Dr. Montessori

Our Favorite Montessori Toys for Babies & Toddlers

My almost 3-year-old son still loves Guidecraft’s Wooden See Saw Sorter. This Montessori toy is perfect for early fine motor work. In addition, this material works in pre-math with the solid shapes and science with the balance scale. Not to mention color and shape matching both activities part of the sensorial area.

This Montessori Color Resemblance Sorting Task is a great way to develop the sense of sight. The child will discriminate between different shades and different colors while working on his fine motor skills. The benefits of this material overlap with the wooden seesaw in a few ways. However, you have a color matching by shade activity, a sweet variation to color tablet work.

Montessori Quote about Babies

What is Montessori for Babies?

According to the American Montessori Society, “A Montessori environment for very young children gives your infant or toddler the freedom to safely explore and learn through discovery. … The classroom is a community in which respect for the independence and character of your child is paramount.”

Young children, even babies, are capable of doing so much for themselves. Adults carry the responsibility of creating a structured, well planned, safe environment for the child to explore and lead his own development.

Plan Toy’s Geometric Sorting Board is great for many of the same reasons. The child has to use problem-solving skills to fit the shape into the proper location. My boys adored this beautiful wooden toy, a terrific manipulative to add to your shelves at home or in the classroom.

Again, my almost 3-year-old still loves this material even though it is a wonderful addition to your Montessori baby toys collection. In addition, the Plan Toy Shape and Sort It Out will keep your infant busy and challenged much like an object permanace box.

Manhattan Toy Natural Skwish Rattle is the perfect first gift for babies. We had one for our boys and it got a lot of use. You see, the shape and feel of the materials fascinates kids. Plus the toy is nimble and kids are able to explore in that way as well.

Hape’s First Pounder works those fine motor skills while getting great energy out. In other words, the child must develop hand-eye coordination to hammer the pegs.

You can never start too early with building blocks and Hape’s Maple Blocks are a great way to introduce your child to the world of spatial awareness.
