This list is going to seem obvious but hopefully serve as a helpful reminder that we are in control of feeling better, more present and happier. More than being in control, the decisions we make to slightly change our day and mood have a huge impact.
{Shower} It will breathe life back into your body. Re-energizing works best for me when I turn the heat down and end with a few minutes of cool water.
{Fresh Air} Deep breaths work wonders on a body and soul. Taking those deep breaths outside in fresh air – whether rainy, snowy, sunny or cloudy – will work those wonders exponentially.
{Body Movement} Stretch. Allow oxygen into the parts of our body that need it most. Go for a walk or a jog. Allow endorphins to do their magical thing.
{Alone Time} For me, time in our home after the boys go to sleep isn’t enough. My mind has trouble letting go. So I make a point to go out to dinner, or coffee, alone at least once a week. Trust me, it is like going to a spa. You will reset in 30 minutes or maybe even less.
{Do a Chore} What? Yup. That’s right. For me sitting quietly folding laundry or gently emptying a dishwasher or sponging down the counters or going to the grocery store (gasp!) alone is mildly therapeutic. Let me be specific though – this chore must be done without children in the room or hanging on your leg.
That is a good start, my friends. Being mindful – as a parent, friend, wife – doesn’t come easy to me. Even though the above seems obvious, I have to work really, really hard at all of them. I believe in the importance of being present and that means taking care of your body and your mind.
