Why Should Parents Care about Emotional Intelligence?

SHARE THIS POST:

Imagine sitting down with a group of children to have a conversation. You notice there are children who are completely aware of the topic of the discussion. They listen, ask appropriate questions, and seem at ease with the situation. These children possess a high level of emotional intelligence.

What is emotional intelligence?

Daniel Goleman, a psychologist, wrote the book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ. His research led to the understanding of this seemingly logical phenomenon. What do you need to have a high emotional IQ? You must recognize your emotions, understand their meaning, and interpret the effect they have on others. You must also perceive others’ emotions.

Motivation

Empathy

The element of empathy can be seen as the most important aspect of emotional intelligence. Recognizing others’ feelings, whether obvious or not, listening to others, avoiding judgment, and demonstrating honesty are ways people show this trait.

Social Skills

The characteristics of great social skills include being a team player, serving as a great communicator, and having the ability to make and maintain friendships.

Developing Emotional Intelligence

One of the best ways to develop a sense of empathy is by reading fictional books. In an article by Karen Weintraub, she postures that since you are able to read about different characters, you can put yourselves in their situation and understand what it’s like to be someone else.

In addition, there are books on social skills which can help children understand the rules to follow in various situations. Social Rules for Kids-The Top 100 Social Rules Kids Need to Succeed is an example of a book that would be helpful for children to learn the habits they need to develop to make and maintain great relationships.

Finally, talk to children about their emotions and how they process certain situations. Dissect the situation in an objective manner so they can learn from it. This is integral in assisting them in the process of having a high emotional intelligence.
