This post includes 10 awesome science experiments for preschoolers. I’ve done many science activities with my boys. Science engages kids and ignites their desire to want to learn more. These science activities allow for a lot of room to grow and learn.
{Psst…If you make it to the end of this post, I have a little surprise for you.}
What is Science in a Montessori Setting?
Science permeates many areas of a Montessori classroom. Dr. Montessori viewed all children as little scientists, the world’s best and most curious explorers. Science, art, & math are often interwoven in a Montessori classroom. In other words, science is about the process, creating, and perspective.
What is a scientist?… We give the name scientist to the type of man who has felt experiment to be a means guiding him to search out the deep truth of life, to lift a veil from its fascinating secrets, and who, in this pursuit, has felt arising within him a love for the mysteries of nature, so passionate as to annihilate the thought of himself. ~ Dr. Maria Montessori
Science is not simply about doing an activity, it is about experimenting. Furthermore, doing a science project involves failing, iterating, observing, and making hypotheses. Science is not is about definitive conclusions.
Montessori Science Experiments
Animal Science Experiment
This easy science experiment is easy and involves sensory that children absolutely love. Weave this activity into a unit on a variety of life sciences and geography units.
How to Make a Moveable Pulley
My sons love this simple science activity with simple machines.
How to Build a Balloon Rocket
My sons continue to ask about this activity. So a simple and fun science experiment. Watch your kids come up with all sorts of ideas to add to this experiment (like a Lego mini figure zip lining in our case) and test hypotheses.
More Science for Kids
Easy Rocket Project for Kids
This activity came from an amazing book called Tinkerlab (highly recommend). Easy to set up and kids won’t want to put it down!
Surface Tension Experiment for Kids
This activity is fun as the kids learn about surface tension while racing their boats.
Easy Motion Activity
My sons are interested in stop-motion videos. So, I figured a good place to start would be with a simple demonstration of basic movie-making.
Build a Magnetic Car
There are many variations to this activity. Kids will come up with their own versions and designs, which is what makes this activity that much more fun! Challenge kids to design and have a race!
How to Make a Bow and Arrow
I found this tutorial online. My boys LOVED this activity. Heck, I did, too. Honestly, I did a lot of the building, but it was easy and my sons had a blast with their bows and arrows.
Easy Friction Experiment
Maybe the coolest and most fascinating experiment we’ve done. Can you pick up this bottle without your hands but instead with a chopstick? Intrigued?
Learn about Electricity
Snap Circuits are a great way for children to learn about electricity but what if you could break it down even more than that? This experiment was intriguing to children for obvious reasons. Once we built our “circuit”, we tested various items and materials for conductivity and insulation.
Baking Soda and Vinegar Experiment with Balloons & Earth Day Science
Baking soda & vinegar experiments never seem to get old. Plus the variations on what you can do with these two substances seem endless. For loads of these ideas, check out The Ultimate List of Baking Soda & Vinegar Experiments.
